Want a unique and interesting way to bond with your family? Try doing an at-home Family Feud game!

The game show Family Feud has been around since the 70s and is loved by people young and old. Along with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud has ranked as one of the most popular game shows in the U.S.

If you’ve enjoyed the show, perhaps you want to try it yourself! This is a great way to bond and get to know people in your life. It is also a great way to spend a Saturday night deepening connections.

In this fun article, learn how to play Family Feud, what materials you’ll need to play, and choose the best questions for your context from our curated list of some of our favorites!

How Do You Play Family Feud?

The object of the game Family Feud is for your team to get the most points by answering survey questions based on what you believe are the most popular answers. Each correct answer is worth a certain number of points based on its popularity.

For example, let’s say the survey question is, “What kind of food do you eat at Thanksgiving?” Possible answers to this question might include turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and corn.

The answer “turkey” is worth the highest amount of points because it is the most popular answer based on surveys. On the other hand, if someone answers “green beans,” they would not receive points because it is not listed as one of the popular answers. (Watch out for wrong answers because they put you at risk of losing points to the opposing team!)

The team that reaches 300 points first wins!

Now that you get the game’s object—winning points—it’s time to walk through the instructions and materials you will need to play.

What you need to play Family Feud

A few materials, some great questions and answers, and at least five people to play are all you need to play Family Feud! Here is the breakdown:

  • One host who is in charge of reading the questions and tracking points
  • Two teams of players (ideally around three to five players per team)
  • A buzzer or anything that makes noise (could be a buzzer app on your iOS or Android device!)
  • A timer for the host to track the amount of time to answer each question (the host can use their phone timer if they like; otherwise, an oven timer can do the trick, too)
  • Pen and paper or a digital device to track points
  • Family Feud questions and answers (see below for 150 of our favorites!)

Step-by-step instructions to play Family Feud

Step one: Face-off

  • One team member from each team is selected to face off with the other.
  • The host reads out a question.
  • The first team member to buzz in answers the question.
  • If the first team member does not answer correctly, the opposing team member has a chance to answer.
  • The team member with the first correct answer can choose to pass the round to the other team or continue the round. (Tip: If it’s a tough topic, you might choose to pass it to the other team in hopes of stealing their points.)
  • For each question, there are two to seven possible answers listed with a point value associated with each. Note: the most common answers receive the highest value points.

Step two: Team round

  • The team playing the round continues taking turns answering the question one by one until they find all the correct top answers (usually two to seven answers per question) or until they get three wrong answers.
  • If the team playing the round gets three wrong answers, the opposing team has one opportunity to guess a correct answer to steal all the points for the round.
  • If the opposing team fails at their one opportunity to steal the points, the team that was playing the original round gets to keep the points that they accumulated.

Step three: Repeat steps one and two

  • For the proceeding rounds, the next team member in line faces off with another opposing team member to start each round until the game is complete.
  • The first team to get 300 points (or the set amount of points you decide as a group) wins!
  • Bonus: At the end of the game, you can play a Fast Money round with five additional questions to try to win an additional 300 points.
